We’re also striving for a more ethical Christmas, and this year we’ve been making our own decorations, including these simple handmade pieces.
These “natural” decorations have been created from items found on winter walks or in our gardens and kitchens. Here’s a list of ideas you can try at home too:
- Paint a fir cone then tie string into a loop around the top ready to hang.
- Dry slices of oranges and apples then thread string through the fruit so it can be hung.
- Collect small sticks and twigs to create simple star shapes that you can then tie or glue together.
Recycled Christmas Tree Craft
Also our recycled Christmas tree craft is a fantastic way of using up textiles that would otherwise go in the landfill. It works particularly well with ribbons but can be created from any brightly colored textiles that have been cut into ribbon-like strips. Here’s how to make yours:
- Find a thick stick about 15cm long and at least 5cm thick.
- Start tying the strips of fabric to the stick, starting around 5cm from the base.
- Continue to do this all the way to the top of the “tree” and finish with a piece of string so you can hang your tree if you like.
If you find your finished decoration isn’t very tree-shaped, you can trim around the edges to give it a better shape.
